Sinusitis is inflammation of the lining of the paranasal sinuses, usually due to infection (viral, bacterial, rarely fungal), allergy, or blocked sinus drainage.
Causes and Risk Factors Common cold and viral upper respiratory infections (most common trigger) Allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum Dental infections (maxillary sinus) Smoking, pollution, dust exposure Low immunity, diabetes
Symptoms Facial pain or pressure over the cheeks, forehead, or around the eyes Nasal blockage with thick yellow-green discharge Postnasal drip and cough Headache that worsens on bending forward Reduced sense of smell, fever, bad breath, fatigue
Ayurvedic Management and Benefits Nasya (medicated nasal oils such as Anu Taila or Shadbindu Taila) lubricates and clears the nasal passages, reduces congestion, and strengthens the sinus lining. Steam inhalation (Nadi Sweda) with eucalyptus, ajwain, or tulsi liquefies Kapha and relieves headache and blockage. Dhoomapana(medicated herbal smoke, only under guidance) helps clear Kapha from the head. Turmeric in warm milk has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial action. Tulsi, ginger, and black pepper decoction (Kadha) boosts immunity and relieves cold and congestion. Trikatu churna helps digest Kapha and improves metabolism. Sitopaladi churna eases cough and respiratory congestion. Jala Neti (saline nasal wash) cleanses the sinuses and reduces recurrence. Pranayama such as Kapalabhati and Anuloma Viloma improves sinus drainage and breathing.
