Abhyangam is a traditional Ayurvedic therapeutic oil massage that nourishes the body, calms the mind and balances the doshas. In Ayurveda, the ancient system of medicine from India, health is not simply the absence of disease. It is a state of balance among body, mind, senses and spirit. Among the many daily and seasonal practices (dinacharya and ritucharya) described in the classical texts, Abhyangam holds a special place. It is the practice of massaging the whole body with warm, herb-infused oil, and it is regarded as both a nurturing ritual and a preventive therapy.

Ayurveda attributes a wide range of benefits to regular Abhyangam.

These are drawn from classical descriptions and traditional experience:

Nourishes the Skin: softer, smoother, better-nourished skin, It acts as a powerful natural moisturizer, leaving your skin radiant, soft, and more resilient to environmental stressors.

Promotes Better Sleep: Practicing it before a warm bath relaxes tense muscles and signals your brain that it is time to wind down for deep rest, calming of the nervous system and deeper, more restful sleep

Lubricates Joints and muscles: Regular oil application penetrates deeply to lubricate the joints, improving flexibility and reducing cracking or stiffness and relief from fatigue

Improves Circulation: The physical massage stimulates blood flow and lymphatic drainage, helping your body flush out toxins naturally.

Mind: a grounding, comforting effect that helps ease stress and anxiety.

Vitality: support for stamina and a sense of well-being, and resistance to the wear of ageing

Calms the Nervous System: The rhythmic strokes combined with warm oil soothe Vata dosha (the Ayurvedic energy associated with air and space), significantly reducing stress and anxiety.

Aging and Stiffness: Great for older adults looking to maintain mobility, flexibility, and muscle tone.

Contraindications:

Directly After Eating: Always wait at least one to two hours after a heavy meal so your body can focus entirely on digesting your food. Infected or Broken Skin: Never apply oil over open wounds, severe rashes, or active skin infections to prevent spreading bacteria.
